Dup\u0103 ce a c\u0103l\u0103torit prin Europa, s-a reinstalat la Bucure\u0219ti \u00een 1910. A fost pacifist \u00een timpul Primului R\u0103zboi Mondial \u0219i a fost \u00eentemni\u021bat \u00een 1918 pentru c\u0103 a contribuit la un ziar pro-german.<\/p><p>Reputa\u021bia lui Arghezi s-a stabilit odat\u0103 cu prima sa colec\u021bie de poezii, Cuvinte potrivite (1927; &#8220;Cuvinte potrivite&#8221;). Aceasta con\u021binea poezii despre angoasa religioas\u0103 \u0219i despre simpatia pentru \u021b\u0103rani, caracterizate de imagini violente \u0219i de o prozodie inovatoare. \u00cen 1930 a publicat dou\u0103 romane care detaliaz\u0103 perioade tulburi din via\u021ba sa: Icoane de lemn (&#8220;Icoane de lemn&#8221;), despre experien\u021bele sale dezam\u0103gitoare ca c\u0103lug\u0103r, \u0219i Poarta neagr\u0103 (&#8220;Poarta neagr\u0103&#8221;), despre \u00eentemni\u021barea sa.<\/p><p>Alte lucr\u0103ri notabile ale lui Arghezi publicate \u00een anii 1930 includ satira distopic\u0103 Tablete din \u01abara de Kuty (1933; &#8220;Tablete din \u021aara lui Kuty&#8221;), o serie de eseuri \u00een proz\u0103 amar\u0103 scrise \u00een 1935-36, precum \u0219i celebr\u0103rile sale poetice ale naturii \u0219i ale copil\u0103riei: Cartea cu juc\u0103rii (1931; &#8220;Cartea juc\u0103riilor&#8221;), C\u0103rticic\u0103 de sear\u0103 (1935; &#8220;Carte pentru sear\u0103&#8221;) \u0219i Hore (1939; &#8220;Dansuri rotunde&#8221;). Cariera sa de poet \u0219i polemist a \u00eenflorit p\u00e2n\u0103 c\u00e2nd a fost din nou \u00eentemni\u021bat \u00een timpul celui de-al Doilea R\u0103zboi Mondial. Dup\u0103 r\u0103zboi, e\u0219ecul s\u0103u de a \u00eembr\u0103\u021bi\u0219a realismul socialist l-a adus \u00een conflict cu regimul comunist. Scrierile sale ulterioare, care reflect\u0103 \u00eencercarea sa de a se adapta la noile standarde oficiale, nu au avut vigoarea de odinioar\u0103. Printre acestea se num\u0103r\u0103 1907 (1955) \u0219i C\u00eentare omului (1956; &#8220;Imnul omenirii&#8221;).
